Helix coach Van Matre in Canton for NFL event
Helix freshman football coach Dave Van Matre is among 51 high school coaches, representing each state and the District of Columbia, selected by the NFL to participate in the fifth annual NFL Youth Football Summit this weekend during Hall of Fame festivities in Canton, Ohio.
Van Matre, who earlier was named the 2005 recipient of the California Coaches Association's Assistant Coach of the Year Award, has been coaching high school football for 38 years. That includes five seasons (1980-84) as Valhalla's varsity head coach.
More than 100 coaches and other supporters of youth football, including former NFL players now coaching at the high school level, will attend the weekend of educational seminars.

Rommel Marentez, a St. Augustine High graduate and current UC Davis student, will play on the Mexican national basketball team at the World University Games starting Aug. 11 in Izmir, Turkey. - NFL Football -
Kickoff ClassicThe third annual San Diego Section Kickoff Football Classic will be played on two nights at different sites. On Aug. 26 at Poway, Madison will meet Monte Vista at 5:30 and Brawley will tackle Poway at 8 p.m. On the following night at Otay Ranch, Calexico will take on Francis Parker at 5 and Chula Vista will play Otay Ranch at 7:30. - NFL Football -
